How to Start a Podcast
What is a podcast?
Podcasts are a great way to generate content for your business. It is often easier to sit down and record a podcast then it is to write out a long blog post or case study. Podcasts also give you the opportunity to share your personality and insights with your customers.
This guide is designed to provide a quick guide to starting your podcast. I've also included a list of resources and courses that you may find helpful in starting a podcast.

1. Choose Your Equipment
The first step in setting up your podcast studio is to select the right equipment and software for the type of podcast that you will be creating.
What's the best equipment for podcasting?
My honest answer here is, whatever equipment you currently own or have available. Don't over think this step. While good audio quality is important to your podcast, my advice is get started producing your first set of episodes and then upgrade as your podcast grows.
What you'll need: a microphone, microphone stand, shock mount, and a pop filter. Most of these are available at popular retail stores (Best Buy, Amazon, B&H, etc.)
I've listed a few "packages" below based on budget and your level of experience.
2. Choose Your Podcast Host
You may be familiar with podcast directories such as Apple Podcasts (iTunes Store), Google Podcasts, Stitcher, Spotify and more. These sites are ways for your potential audience to discover your podcast, but they are not actual podcast hosts. A podcast host will store your audio files and distribute the episodes to the podcast directories that you setup in Step 6.
When searching for a podcast host, you'll want to compare features and value. I recommend looking for a host that includes: podcast statics, analytical tools, embeddable podcast player, ability to publish to podcast directories, and social sharing features.
Here are my recommendations:
Simplecast - $12 per month
Simplecast is the easiest way for a podcast creator to publish and distribute audio on the internet. They offer one plan with unlimited bandwidth and storage.
3. Record Your First Episode
There are several ways to record your podcast. I've found that two of the easiest software to use are GarageBand (Mac) and Audacity (Windows and Mac). Both are free programs. If you own a Mac, iPad, or iPhone you should already have GarageBand installed.
You can download and install Audacity for Windows or Mac using this link.
If you record your conversation with a Guest using Zoom or Skype, you can save the file and then import your audio file into GarageBand or Audacity to edit.
4. Edit Your Episode and Upload

Once you've edited the audio file and you are happy with the podcast episode, you will need to export the file using GarageBand or Audacity to an MP3 file. The user manuals above include instructions on how to export the files in MP3 format.
You can now upload the MP3 file to your podcast host.
5. Submit Your Podcast to iTunes, Others
So far you've recorded your first episode, learned how to edit your audio files, and uploaded the file to your podcast host. Now you need to distribute your podcast feed to all of the popular podcast directories.
I recommend submitting your feed to these directories before you are ready to launch and promote your podcast. Some of the directories have a review and acceptance period before your podcast is available on their platform. The last thing you want is to promote a podcast that isn't listed in the directories!
